The Sower and the Seed

Happy Sunday!

This weekend we hear the parable of the sower who abundantly sows seed on the path, on rocky soil, amongst thorns, and on rich soil. As with most parables we can unpack them from many different directions. This parable invites us to consider the type of soil we are that receives the seed, that is, the word of God. However, we don't just stop there. We also ask ourselves about the sower himself, who is God.

Why does sower sow seed so recklessly? As if he doesn't care what he might be wasting? This is how God is with us, He is willing to be reckless so that everyone can have a chance at salvation. God doesn't function in a unilateral way. He doesn't just sow in abundance and then leave us be. Rather, God sows in abundance and then does everything else for us in abundance. Where have we noticed God doing this in our daily lives? Sometimes we forget to look for these marks, and yet they are always there.

Este fin de semana escuchamos la parabola del sembrador, que esparce abundantemente la semilla en el camino, en terreno pedregoso, entre espinos y en tierra fértil. Como ocurre con la mayoría de las parabolas, podemos analizarlas desde distintas perspectivas. Esta parábola nos invita a reflexionar sobre qué tipo de tierra somos al recibir la semilla, es decir, la Palabra de Dios. Sin embargo, no nos detenemos ahí. Tambien nos preguntamos por el sembrador mismo, que es Dios.

¿Por qué el sembrador siembra la semilla con tanta imprudencia? ¿Como si no le importara lo que pudiera desperdiciar? Así es como Dios se comporta con nosotros: está dispuesto a arriesgarse para que todos tengan la oportunidad de alcanzar la salvación. Dios no actua de manera unilateral; no se limita a sembrar en abundancia y luego dejarnos a nuestra suerte. Más bien, Dios siembra en abundancia y despues hace todo lo demas por nosotros tambien en abundancia. ¿En qué momentos de nuestra vida cotidiana hemos percibido a Dios actuando asi? A veces olvidamos buscar estas señales, y sin embargo, siempre están ahí.
