Fr. Dan Vanyo new assignment / Assumption Holy Day

08-13-2023Weekly ReflectionFr. Dan Connealy

Happy Sunday!

I hope everyone had an excellent week. Last weekend we announced that Bishop Dolan has appointed Fr. Dan Vanyo the new Parochial Administrator at Cristo Rey parish in the Grand Canyon. His new assignment will start on September 1. I am very sorry to lose him so soon. It has been a great gift for me to work with him. He loves this parish very much but is looking forward to this new assignment. I have been told that we will receive a new priest at some point in September. We are not sure yet who this will be or when exactly he will arrive so please keep this transition in your prayers.

This coming week we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. This special feast day commemorates the bodily assumption of Mary into Heaven. Mary, since she was not affected by original sin, did not experience death in the way that we do. We recall St. Paul writing to the Romans, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The assumption speaks to the lack of corruption by sin in Mary’s life. Joseph Ratzinger says that when the Church proclaims the Assumption of Mary, this is in fact the highest form of canonization. I look forward to celebrating this solemnity with you. Please remember that it is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass schedule is as follows:

Monday, Aug. 14: 5:30pm Vigil Mass at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Tuesday, Aug. 15: 6:30am at Our Lady of Guadalupe, 8:15am at SFdA, 12:15pm at SFdA

I believe previously we had evening Masses on Holy Days but the schedule is a little bit different since we are down to two priests. Thank you for your understanding!

Have a great week and know of my prayers!
