John the Baptist's Message of Repentance

Happy Sunday!

On this third Sunday of Advent we hear from the Gospel according to John. He recounts for us the ministry of St. John the Baptist in the desert and those wondering who he is. He tells them he is not the Christ, but rather, “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.” This voice in the desert is the voice of the one who calls each one of us to repentance.

When John the Baptist went into the desert people would come out of their towns and cities to hear him speak. His message was the message of repentance and asking for forgiveness of sins so that they could be prepared when the Messiah came. Each of us is invited to the same repentance, especially during this Advent season, so that we can receive Jesus in the manger at Christmas. We celebrate his coming in human flesh so that we might be prepared for His coming at the end of time.

If you have not been to confession recently, this is a great time to go. In fact, this Wednesday we will plan to have extra priests for confessions from 5:00-6:00pm. There will also be regularly scheduled confessions on Saturday morning, Dec 23.

En este tercer domingo de Adviento escuchamos el Evangelio según Juan. Nos cuenta el ministerio de San Juan Bautista en el desierto y a quienes se preguntan quién es. Les dice que él no es el Cristo, sino más bien: "Soy la voz del que grita en el desierto: 'Enderecen el camino del Señor', como dijo el profeta Isaías". Esta voz en el desierto es la voz de quien nos llama a cada uno de nosotros al arrepentimiento.

Cuando Juan el Bautista iba al desierto, la gente salía de sus pueblos y ciudades para oírle hablar. Su mensaje fue el mensaje de arrepentimiento y de pedir perdón de los pecados para que pudieran estar preparados cuando viniera el Mesías. Cada uno de nosotros está invitado al mismo arrepentimiento, especialmente durante este tiempo de Adviento, para poder recibir a Jesús en el pesebre en Navidad. Celebramos su venida en carne humana para que estemos preparados para su venida al final de los tiempos.

Si no has confesado recientemente, este es un buen momento para hacerlo. De hecho, este miércoles planearemos tener sacerdotes adicionales para las confesiones de 5:00-6:00pm. También habrá confesiones programadas regularmente el sábado 23 por la mañana.
