Our Lady of Guadalupe Church – A Century of Faith
Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel stands as one of Flagstaff’s most cherished spiritual landmarks. A humble sanctuary built not by architects or contractors, but by the hands and hearts of the Mexican Immigrants and Indigenous families who shaped the early life of the Southside community. What began as a simple gathering place for prayer has become a living testament to resilience, identity and enduring devotion.
The chapel enters its 100th year with a renewed commitment to preserving this historic place of worship and community gatherings. Once located along the original Route 66 before the highway was realigned. The chapel welcomed travelers and migrant workers seeking prayers and rest. Its close proximity to Northern Arizona University made it an important place of worship for students and faculty seeking spiritual nourishment. The chapel is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a recognition of its cultural, architectural and spiritual significance.
The chapel is a simple blend of bungalow American craftsmanship, featuring gothic inspired steeple and windows. Sustainable locally sourced volcanic rock used to reduce costs and creating a durable and naturally insulated masonry walls. Stained glass windows, donated by parish families, adds spiritual symbolism and a personal legacy to the building.
As we prepare for the Centennial Mass and Fiesta on May 16, 2026, we are inviting the community to help sustain and preserve the chapel for future generations. Preservation work, cultural programming and the centennial celebration all rely on community support. Those who wish to help, donate, or contribute to these efforts provide essential resources that keeps this beloved landmark thriving.
